93,000+
More than 93,000 Indiana drivers have completed our Driver Safety Program.
Behind that number is a story worth telling.
In 2000, our founder noticed something that seems obvious now.
The internet was already changing how people did nearly everything. You could bank online, book a flight online, and even read the news online. But if you got a traffic ticket, you still had to find a classroom, give up an evening or a Saturday, and sit in it for four hours. This was often at an inconvenient time and in an inconvenient place.
Traffic school had not moved online. Not because it couldn't. Because nobody had done it yet.
She set out to be the one who did, and she ran into the same objection everywhere she went: how does a court know who is sitting at the keyboard?
She was a lawyer, so she treated that as a problem to solve rather than an answer to accept. The solution was identity verification built directly into the course, questions only the registrant could answer, asked at unpredictable moments, and all on a clock. California judges accepted it. The program was approved.
That work made us one of the first companies in the country to bring traffic safety courses online. We wrote our own curriculum and engineered our own learning platform from the ground up, proving student by student that a well-built online course could serve drivers as effectively as any classroom while reaching the people a classroom never could.
In 2003, the State of Indiana opened a new chapter in driver safety.
For the first time, the state issued a Request for Proposal offering its citizens the option of completing the Driver Safety Program online, whether court ordered, required by the BMV, or taken voluntarily, and rather than only through classroom instruction. It was a forward-thinking decision, and it drew proposals from online providers across the country.
Indiana did not run the process casually. Vendors had to submit proposals running to a hundred pages, documenting security, identity verification, software design, curriculum, reporting capability, and student recordkeeping. The state wasn't looking for a website. It was looking for a provider it could hand a court order to.
CyberActive, Inc., doing business as A Better Driver, submitted its proposal. After a state committee reviewed every program that applied, Indiana selected A Better Driver. We had the strongest program and the strongest technology.
The decision did not go unchallenged. Brick-and-mortar driving schools and competing online providers protested the award, arguing that an online program had no place in Indiana's driver safety system at all.
Rather than respond from a distance, our founder traveled to Indiana and made the case herself, in person, before the State Assembly. The argument was straightforward: A Better Driver was one of the first companies in the nation to bring traffic school online, with a proven program, sound technology, and years of real results behind it.
The State Assembly agreed. The award stood.
That moment made A Better Driver one of the pioneers of online driver safety in Indiana. It also set the standard we have held ourselves to ever since: earn the state's trust, and keep earning it. More than twenty years and multiple contract renewals later, including our newest contract effective January 2026, we are still proud to serve this state.
The learning platform behind our course is not off-the-shelf software. We built it ourselves in 2000 and have spent a quarter century refining it across millions of students.
Every lesson combines video, graphics, audio narration, and interactive elements designed to hold your attention, because a course only works if people actually absorb it. The material is written for licensed adults, not beginners. The curriculum complies fully with Indiana's driving laws and statutes and meets every requirement set by the Indiana BMV.

The Indiana Driver Safety Program (DSP) — the state's official name for traffic school — is a state-authorized course of at least four hours. It may be required by the BMV, ordered by a court, or taken voluntarily by any licensed Indiana driver.
On successful completion, the Indiana BMV applies a 4-point credit to your Official Driver Record. The credit can be applied once every three years, and it can help keep your point total below the suspension threshold. Completing a DSP does not remove a citation from your driving history — it applies a credit against your points. Keeping points off your record may also help protect your insurance rates, though that depends on your insurer.
If you are unsure whether you are required to take the course, your court order or BMV notice will say so, and our support team can help you understand your next steps.
